It is said the trend was set by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert when they bought Balmoral Castle and discovered shooting. Many others followed suit and bought country houses and estates in Scotland so that they could enjoy the season too! Many of these shooting lodges are now rented out as self-catering or catered accommodation where you can stay for a shooting holiday and enjoy this great sport in Scotland.

Grouse Shooting

The grouse shooting season opens on August 12 and closes December 10. Grouse is a challenge for shooters because the birds fly fast, making them particularly testing.

In addition, the habitat of grouse makes them hard to spot – they are mostly found in heather moorland.

Pheasant & Partridge Shooting

From The Borders, Glasgow and Edinburgh in the south to where the Highlands begin in Inverness and to the north, there are plenty of driven pheasant shoots to choose from – not forgetting the Scottish islands. If you’re travelling to shoot in Scotland from elsewhere, then it might be worth making a trip of it and organising a mixed sporting week combining fantastic pheasant shooting with stalking or some rough shooting.

Rough Shooting

Rough shooting is considered by some to be the true essence of game hunting and can come in many forms.

Deer Stalking

Dramatic mountainous, lowland and forested landscapes have drawn people to Scotland to stalk deer for centuries.

This skillful and solitary tradition is as old as the hills themselves and attracts visitors back year after year. Deer stalking requires patience, a steady nerve, and extensive fieldcraft from the stalkers and ghillies who will accompany you on the hunt.
